Tour: Fierce Women

Tour Fierce Women.jpg

The museum is brimming with artwork by and about women who thrived as professionals and influencers despite social norms that denounced such public, “unfeminine” behavior. Discover a diverse cast of fierce women who refused to let men define their place; thumbed their noses at the limited roles society accorded them; and blazed trails as artists, activists, and innovators—proving that fierce gets the job done.

Inspired by Museum Hack, this unconventional, edgy, and fast-paced tour is fun, fearless, and free. Part of Free Community Day.

What Is A Personal Essay, And How Do I Publish One?

What Is A Personal Essay, And How Do I Publish One.jpg

In this workshop, we'll open by discussing the basics: What is a personal essay, and how do I know I've written one? We'll touch on narrative arc, conflict, tension, and what makes a personal story relevant to a larger audience. From there, we'll discuss how to approach a publication with your work. For example, what qualities make an essay good for a literary magazine versus a mainstream publication? We'll also discuss how to literally submit your work, including how to reach out to editors, cover letters, contests, and what to consider when it comes to finding a home for your essay.

Teaching Artist: Marissa Higgins is a queer writer and editor based in Washington, DC. Her personal essay on food and poverty, originally in Catapult, appears in the Best American Food Writing 2018. Her other nonfiction appears, or is forthcoming, in the Sun, Atlantic, Washington Post, Guernica, Salon, NPR, Slate, Rumpus, and elsewhere. Her work centers on poverty, LGBTQ issues, and how food intersects class and culture. She is working on a book of essays.

Women Uncorked: Consenting Adults?

Women Uncorked Consenting Adults.jpg

Do you like to talk about sex, but are worried about your friends sayings its TMI? Are you interested in discussing the good parts, bad parts, and everything in between? Do you just think sex is a fun and fascinating subject? Then pour yourself a drink, pull up a chair, and join the circle. Our group welcomes all persons of all ages, orientations, experiences, and relationship styles who identify as female.

Our theme this month is consent. Enthusiastic verbal consent is the new gold standard for sexual encounters. Sounds great, but how do you do that? What if you ruin the moment? We’re going to talk about times when our mental telepathy went on the fritz, do a few lightning rounds of consent practice, and then segue into our regular uncensored sex discussion.
