What Does Authority Sound Like?: The Female Voice of Leadership

What Does Authority Sound Like The Female Voice of Leadership.png

Bossy. BitchyShrill.

Do any of those words ring a bell - or make you cringe - when you think of a woman speaking with authority?

Everyone is talking about what really holds women back in the workplace: vocal patterns like upspeak and vocal fry, too much “just” or “sorry”, an inability to Lean In or crack The Confidence Code....and there’s a lot of noise out there about what does and does not work.

So are we supposed to express ourselves with confidence and clarity? What does leadership SOUND like?

In this highly interactive workshop, Casey Erin Clark, co-founder of Vital Voice Training, will give you a crash course on:

  • How to find a voice that sounds like YOU, but communicates how you want others to see you

  • How society sees authority and power in communication and how you can fit into that framework

  • The habits that lead to common vocal issues which keep us from feeling confident and being present

  • How to access power even when you don’t feel powerful

Attendees can expect to be on their feet and using their voices several times within the workshop, all within a safe and supported exploration outside of comfort zones. All participation is voluntary, of course, and our participants always have a blast.

Co-Hosted by Rachel Wynn of Feminist Founder.

FOR WHOM: Women+ who want to access their more confident, powerful voices - especially aspiring or current leaders, managers, and entrepreneurs.

Emotional Labor 101: How to Stop Doing #AllTheThings at Home

Emotional Labor 101 How to Stop Doing #AllTheThings at Home.png

Women are naturally more empathetic and patient, enjoy running a household, and are the obvious choice for nurturing the children...right?

The patriarchal message that women’s time and work is inherently less valuable is a systemic one and, conveniently, gives men an excuse to be lazy while women silently pick up the slack. Yes, men today do a higher amount of household work than any generation before them, but working women, especially working moms, continue to do, on average, 50% more.

From the endless mental lists to picking up the right brand of toilet paper at the store, women perform a disproportionate amount of unpaid "emotional labor" at home which saps time and energy that could be spent building their careers.

Rachel Wynn of Feminist Founder will present and lead a discussion on emotional labor that will cover:

• What emotional labor is and isn't, explained visually via a hilarious and informative feminist comic
• How our society perpetuates the stereotype of "women's work"
• Re-training your mindset to "drop the ball", as author Tiffany Dufu suggests (sometimes we're our own worst critic!)
• Concrete steps on how to communicate with your partner and design a system to create an equitable household

Attendees will also receive a hard copy or PDF of Rachel's "Emotional Labor Action Packet" that includes:

○ Emotional labor book recommendations
○ Library of articles on emotional labor in the home and at work
○ Script for having "The Talk" with your partner
○ Household chore spreadsheet template

This event is gender-inclusive and pinot noir, pinot grigio (21+), and sparkling cider will be served. To avoid EB fees, feel free to Venmo RachelRazzle5 + your email address to save your spot.

WITCH Circle: Scorpio New Moon

witch circle scorpio.jpg

Join @fireandbloom + @antleralchemy for our tenth WITCH Circle in this inaugural series.

This month we are moving into the underbelly of our consciousness, with the new moon in Scorpio. We can use this new moon to explore the shadow side of our personality and our subconscious, and connect with other realms. Scorpio is associated with the darkest and most intimate depths of the human psyche, so expect your internal world to enter a phase of transformation. Scorpio can take us all the way to rock bottom on the inside, and then skyrocket us toward a beautiful new beginning. Expect a major overhaul of your internal processes. This is an opportune time to do work with the subconscious and shift old programming, and connect with ancestors for guidance.

Harness the power of this new moon by taking note of old subconscious thoughts or patterns which no longer serve you, and working with the subconscious. Acknowledge your shadow. During this circle, we will connect with our ancestral lineage, explore Native American legends and ancestral ceremony with April of @antleralchemy. We will hear the story of Isis as told by guest speaker, Mathilde of @Epikurious, and indulge in the sweet aroma of her handcrafted incense. Michelle of @fireandbloom will lead us in a meditative exploration of the subconscious, and open up a discussion on past life regression.

*This event is for women or femme identifying people only*

Women Uncorked Downtown: Religion and Sex

Women Uncorked Downtown Religion and Sex.jpg

Do you like to talk about sex, but are worried about your friends sayings its TMI? Are you interested in discussing the good parts, bad parts, and everything in between? Do you just think sex is a fun and fascinating subject? Then order yourself a drink, pull up a chair, and join the circle. In honor of Halloween, this month's topic is "religion and sex." Did you grow up in the church, go to religious school or summer Bible camp, or belong to the church youth group? How did that affect your opinion or knowledge of sex? Were you able to compartmentalize what the preacher said versus what you and your friends actually did? Are you still carrying around those teachings? Do you actively practice a religion? There's so much to unpack and discuss!

What Is A Personal Essay, And How Do I Publish One?

What Is A Personal Essay, And How Do I Publish One.jpg

In this workshop, we'll open by discussing the basics: What is a personal essay, and how do I know I've written one? We'll touch on narrative arc, conflict, tension, and what makes a personal story relevant to a larger audience. From there, we'll discuss how to approach a publication with your work. For example, what qualities make an essay good for a literary magazine versus a mainstream publication? We'll also discuss how to literally submit your work, including how to reach out to editors, cover letters, contests, and what to consider when it comes to finding a home for your essay.

Teaching Artist: Marissa Higgins is a queer writer and editor based in Washington, DC. Her personal essay on food and poverty, originally in Catapult, appears in the Best American Food Writing 2018. Her other nonfiction appears, or is forthcoming, in the Sun, Atlantic, Washington Post, Guernica, Salon, NPR, Slate, Rumpus, and elsewhere. Her work centers on poverty, LGBTQ issues, and how food intersects class and culture. She is working on a book of essays.
