People Uncorked

People Uncorked.jpg

People Uncorked is an expanded version of the popular Women Uncorked group. It's an anything-goes sex discussion and education group that is open to people of any gender identity, age, background, and sexual orientation. Come one, come all!

Each ticket is good for TWO people, so bring your partner or friend.

The format will be anonymous question or confession: everyone will get a note card and write what's on their mind: a burning query, a cautionary tale, that thing's that been bugging you -- whatever. Then we put the note cards in a bowl, I read them at random, and we discuss together.

Women Uncorked was founded by Jennifer Beman at Rhizome in Takoma. Visit www.women-uncorked and Women Uncorked DC on Facebook to learn more.

Emotional Labor 101: How to Stop Doing #AllTheThings at Home

Emotional Labor 101 How to Stop Doing #AllTheThings at Home.png

Women are naturally more empathetic and patient, enjoy running a household, and are the obvious choice for nurturing the children...right?

The patriarchal message that women’s time and work is inherently less valuable is a systemic one and, conveniently, gives men an excuse to be lazy while women silently pick up the slack. Yes, men today do a higher amount of household work than any generation before them, but working women, especially working moms, continue to do, on average, 50% more.

From the endless mental lists to picking up the right brand of toilet paper at the store, women perform a disproportionate amount of unpaid "emotional labor" at home which saps time and energy that could be spent building their careers.

Rachel Wynn of Feminist Founder will present and lead a discussion on emotional labor that will cover:

• What emotional labor is and isn't, explained visually via a hilarious and informative feminist comic
• How our society perpetuates the stereotype of "women's work"
• Re-training your mindset to "drop the ball", as author Tiffany Dufu suggests (sometimes we're our own worst critic!)
• Concrete steps on how to communicate with your partner and design a system to create an equitable household

Attendees will also receive a hard copy or PDF of Rachel's "Emotional Labor Action Packet" that includes:

○ Emotional labor book recommendations
○ Library of articles on emotional labor in the home and at work
○ Script for having "The Talk" with your partner
○ Household chore spreadsheet template

This event is gender-inclusive and pinot noir, pinot grigio (21+), and sparkling cider will be served. To avoid EB fees, feel free to Venmo RachelRazzle5 + your email address to save your spot.

Women Uncorked Downtown: Religion and Sex

Women Uncorked Downtown Religion and Sex.jpg

Do you like to talk about sex, but are worried about your friends sayings its TMI? Are you interested in discussing the good parts, bad parts, and everything in between? Do you just think sex is a fun and fascinating subject? Then order yourself a drink, pull up a chair, and join the circle. Our group welcomes all persons of all ages, orientations, experiences, and relationship styles who identify as female.

In honor of Halloween, this month's topic is "religion and sex." Did you grow up in the church, go to religious school or summer Bible camp, or belong to the church youth group? How did that affect your opinion or knowledge of sex? Were you able to compartmentalize what the preacher said versus what you and your friends actually did? Are you still carrying around those teachings? Do you actively practice a religion? There's so much to unpack and discuss!

Grit in the District: Branding For Start Ups

Grit in the District Branding For Start Ups.jpg

The word 'branding' is thrown around a lot in the start up world, but what does it actually mean? Branding is so much more than a logo or a color palette, it's the experience that you give your audience any time they come in contact with your company. That means when starting a business, branding has to be a priority from the beginning stages.

Join RINGLET and the panel of all D.C. based women business owners for a conversation on the importance of branding. You'll walk away with solid ideas on how to improve your own start-up or side hustle's branding.

They will be hosting their second 'Grit in the District' panel event of the year at Fostr Collaborative in Georgetown! Kendra Scott will be offering a 'Mobile Color Bar' where you'll have a chance to create your own custom pieces. 20% of all proceeds from the Mobile Color Bar will be doanted to Suited For Change, a DC non-profit that empowers women by increasing their employment and job retention potential. They are the area's leading nonprofit for women in need of professional attire, mentoring, and job-readiness education.

Money Circle | How to Ask for a Raise

Money Circle How to Ask for a Raise.png

If you're like many people, the end of the calendar year also means it's performance review time. This time can be stressful, both because you're nervous about your own review, but also because asking for a raise can be uncomfortable and scary. But no one will advocate for you if you don't advocate for yourself, so it's important to be prepared to negotiate and make your case.

Even if you've already been through your review for the year, it's always a good time to brush up on how to ask for a raise. Join Money Circle this month and you'll walk away with concrete ways to ask for a raise and back up the ask with concrete evidence that you deserve it.

The Emotional Labor Union: Anger

The Emotional Labor Union Anger.jpg

"I am angry. We should all be angry. Anger has a long history of bringing about change." -Chimamanda Ngozi

Anger is one of those emotions that is unsettling societally for women to show. We're all familiar with the angry black woman trope but really only men are 'allowed' to show anger without being questioned. Why is it this way?

Women are socially conditioned from a young age to stifle anger since it is seen as divisive. How many of you have gotten so mad about something you've burst into tears? Yeah, me too. How do we reclaim this emotion in a healthy way?

Anger is a necessary and reasonable response to many situations in life so why is it that women are in many ways not allowed to access it? We'll address the following questions:

How are some ways we show anger without actually getting angry?

What power is there in accessing anger?

How do we reclaim anger and help others do the same?

What are some healthy ways to express anger and let it flow out of us without it becoming destructive?

We'll also commune and share stories of times we've gotten angry and support each other in choosing this emotion.

As always there will be wine, snacks and a good time!*

What Is A Personal Essay, And How Do I Publish One?

What Is A Personal Essay, And How Do I Publish One.jpg

In this workshop, we'll open by discussing the basics: What is a personal essay, and how do I know I've written one? We'll touch on narrative arc, conflict, tension, and what makes a personal story relevant to a larger audience. From there, we'll discuss how to approach a publication with your work. For example, what qualities make an essay good for a literary magazine versus a mainstream publication? We'll also discuss how to literally submit your work, including how to reach out to editors, cover letters, contests, and what to consider when it comes to finding a home for your essay.

Teaching Artist: Marissa Higgins is a queer writer and editor based in Washington, DC. Her personal essay on food and poverty, originally in Catapult, appears in the Best American Food Writing 2018. Her other nonfiction appears, or is forthcoming, in the Sun, Atlantic, Washington Post, Guernica, Salon, NPR, Slate, Rumpus, and elsewhere. Her work centers on poverty, LGBTQ issues, and how food intersects class and culture. She is working on a book of essays.

The Emotional Labor Union: Fathers & Daughters

fathers & daughters.jpg

“These are the things I want for you — to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world.” - Barack Obama

The societal structure in which we live is essentially a mass generalization of the father daughter relationship.

Patriarchy: A system of society or government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is reckoned through the male line.

It almost feels like the idolization of the father figure has yet to be challenged by feminism. I dare you to google "Father daughter relationship" and just take a gander at the first five entries.

That being said father daughter relationships are unique. Dads are seen as kings - someone to be worshipped in popular culture. But I would wager that a lot of us were shaped more by how our fathers let us down than by how they championed us. Whether our relationships with our fathers are good, bad or non-existent, we all have an inextricable connection to our fathers which has shaped us into the women we are today. Let's convene and talk about our relationships with our fathers through a feminist lens.
